BRIEF VITA
- I started my Ph.D. (2003–2006) at
the University of Zaragoza exploring
localization phenomena (discrete
breathers) in nonlinear discrete
systems, closely collaborating with
the Center of Nolinear Studies of the
Los Alamos National laboratory. During
this years I also delved into the
structure of interaction networks in
complex systems and studied
nonequilibrium phenomena like
synchronization, chaos, and
congestion. This work earned me the
Extraordinary Doctorate Award in 2006
and the Young Researcher Award from
the Spanish Royal Society of Physics
in 2007.
My postdoc years took me to the Scuola Superiore di Catania (Italy) as research associate, the Weizmann Institute as visiting researcher, and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona) as a Juan de la Cierva fellow. During this time I broadened my focus to include disease spreading and social dynamics on networks, tackling topics like evolutionary game theory, the emergence of social consensus and the design of mitigation measures for epidemic control. In 2009, I joined the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Madrid) as a faculty member in Applied Mathematics, where I began working on explosive phase transitions and multilayer networks.
The former research themes stayed at the core of my research when, as a Ramón y Cajal fellow (2011–2015), I finally come back at the University of Zaragoza. In 2016, upon promotion to Associate Professor, I founded the Theoretical and Applied Modeling Group (GOTHAM) at the Institute for Biocomputation and Physics of Complex Systems (BIFI), where I continue as Principal Investigator and, since 2023, as Full Professor in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics.
Over my career, I’ve published more than 150 JCR-indexed papers in top journals, including Physics Reports, Nature Physics, PNAS, Physical Review Letters, Physical Review X, Nature Communications, Science Advances, and Nature Human Behavior. These findings have also been presented as an invited speaker at more than 60 conferences, workshops, schools, and other scientific events.
